They are to real

I’m going to share a pet peeve of mine with you all. I hate the fact my gran just doesnt understand the internet.

Let me be more specific. Growing up i was never what you would call sociable. I always much preffered my own company over going out and doing stuff. Now was i got older and got into online gaming i started making friends online. I loved talking to them and the social aspect of my gaming activites was a big factor in my personal enjoyment. Now to the pet peeve, my gran would often say that i needed to go out and make friends more, when i replied i had loads of friends online she would normally react by saying “yeah but they’re not real”.

Just because i’m not meeting/talking to someone face-to-face doesn’t make the relationship between me and them any less real. The people i talk to online, i may only see their avatars but controlling those avatars are real people, with families, jobs and everything else. It seemed to me like my gran placed little to no value on relationships formed online. I know people who originally met online, they now live together and have a daughter. I met one of my best friends, Rachel, online and we’re now living together with another girl whilst studying at university.

Meeting people through online gaming, for me atleast is far easier than doing it in person. You know from the second you meet them that you share atleast one big intrest with them, especially if its an MMO where they’re paying monthly in order to play. It also has the added advantage of its virtually impossible for people to be racist/sexist or any other prejudice in game. All you see is the persons avatar, you’ve got no idea if the’re black, white, asian, male or female, whatever. You get to know people by their personality not by what they look like or what colour their skin is.

So i say you you gran, they are to real.
